National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day
February 07, 2007
The message is clear. . . GET EDUCATED, GET TESTED, GET INVOLVED, GET TREATED!!!!! While African Americans represent approximately 13 percent of the U.S. population, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that the group accounts for almost half (49%) of the nation’s AIDS cases. According to the National Center for Health Statistics 2006 Report, HIV/AIDS is one of the top 10 leading causes of death for African Americans; and in the same year African Americans accounted for more than half (54 percent) of estimated new HIV infections in the United States. ..

Young adults, acceptance outweighs risk
November 04, 2006
If you are, or know some teens that are sexually active, you may want to check out this article. It sheds new light on why people tend to take chances, when they know the consequences of their high risk sexual behavior. According to Valerie F. Reyna of Cornell University:
Social acceptance and the allure of rebellion right now outweigh the costs later. (Even adults, not to mention financiers, prefer immediate benefits to future ones.) Teaching teens to assess risks accurately won't decrease stupid behavior -- they're already pretty accurate at gauging the consequences. They just aren't much bothered by them. No wonder 3 million new cases of STDs are diagnosed in U.S. adolescents each year.Check out the article in its entirety at the Post-Gazette.com...

Do you believe in Magic?
October 18, 2006
Mr. Magic Johnson is on a 10-city tour spreading the word to black communities about HIV/AIDS. I have to applaud this man, he is contracted HIV, and told the world. It seems he has dedicated his life to giving back to the black community. I'd have to say, what he does is admirable. I wonder how many other people would openly to their life story to the world, in hopes of saving the life of someone else. Whatever his motivation for doing what he does; I still applaud his intention. My hats off to Magic - keep it up man! Check the full out the full story..

Utah offering free STD screening, limited time only!
September 21, 2006
The State of Utah is currently offering free gonorrhea and chlamydia testing this week, September 18-22. Apparently, the Utah Department of Health noticed an increase in cases of sexually transmitted diseases throughout the State. I'm thinking some other States need to follow Utah's lead, and be more active in their combating their own respective health statistics. Or better yet, let's get a bus like the Red Cross and hit the road!.. ![]()

Men who sleep with men (MSM), or Neo-heterosexual
September 20, 2006
According to Reuters.com, a survey of approximately 4,000 New York men found that of those who were self-described heterosexuals, about 10% had exclusively slept with men in the past year. Why is this important? According to Reuters:
In general, self-described heterosexuals, whether they had sex with men or not, had fewer sexual partners than men who said they were homosexual. However, self-described straight men who had sex with other men were less likely than gay men to have had an HIV test recently or to use condoms.
All the more reason to be more inquisitive about your partners sexual history. If you are, or plan on having sex with someone, its imperative that you know their sexual history. If that's still not enough for you, get tested together! ..

Kaiser Report, Top excuses for not getting tested
September 18, 2006
One of the most insightful charts on the attitudes people have about getting tested for HIV. This report was published by the Kaiser Family Foundation, one of the leading organizations in the World when it comes to addressing the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Just looking at the chart is pretty self-explanatory - people just don't think these diseases will ever touch there lives:
The most frequently cited reason for not getting tested among those who have never had an HIV test is not feeling at risk (61%). Smaller shares of those who have never been tested cite the following reasons: their doctor never recommended it (21%), they worry about confidentiality (13%), they don’t know where to get tested (10%), they don’t like needles or giving blood (8%), and they’re afraid they’ll test positive (3%).Check out the chart for yourself here on Kaiser's website...

What do you think about "Plan B"?
August 26, 2006
The new contraceptive pill Plan B has been all over the news lately. President Bush seems to like the idea of making it accessible over the counter for teens under the age of 18. However, there are some people who think it would be a bad idea, like some religious organizations and activist groups. What do you think? Comment and let your voice be heard on the subject!.. ![]()

MSNBC, Teens don't use condoms
August 04, 2006
I came across a disturbing article on MSNBC. The article reported that over half of teens admitted to not using condoms during sexually intercourse. I don't know about you, but I find that alarming; especially with 1 in 4 teens contracting a sexually transmitted disease every year. To read the full article, goto MSNBC... ![]()
