Love Letter to Black America

When I think about HIV it’s hard not to think conspiracy
Ms. Evers Boys and/or Tuskegee experiment in the new millennium
Could it be that when a black man goes to the penitentiary?
He is infected purposely with HIV

HIV is more than a disease
It is a state of mind
Consistently forced into deeper levels of H.I.V.
That is Hopelessness, Ignorance, and Violence
A.I.D.S. Accepting Indolence Daily and Systematically
Men sleeping with men (MSM) who say they are not gay
Well what are you?

Men deep-rooted with the greatest sense of slave inferiority that you spread HIV willingly
Women whose ancestors were raped and oppressed clinging to each pseudo “I love you”
Because if loving a black man is wrong they don’t wanna be right
Willing to just roll the dice and take that chance
Even though it could mean the end of health and wellbeing

Why is it so easy to say YES to disease and NO to abstinence, monogamy, and condoms?
This shit is common sense to me
Are we so starved for love that nothing even matters?
Not true love, not security, not respect, not safety, not HIV
I’m not saying that the black man or the black woman is the enemy
HIV is the nemesis, the antagonist in this poetry

I’m just ready to wake up from this nightmare called the HIV pandemic
Is that moment of pleasure worth a lifetime of pain?
Some say you can live with HIV, but why would you want to
Let’s unite to fight our real enemies: HIV, poverty, and lack of knowledge
It’s not a game people
Stay safe
