It pays to watch GoodTimes marathons!
July 28, 2006
After a long hard day of keyboard punching, I like to watch a little boob-tube before I drift off to sleep. As I was flipping the channel on my way to the cartoon network, I happened upon the Black-American TV classic sitcom, "GoodTimes". Just like the next man, I love watching classic TV shows; so I said to myself, why not? I can miss an episode or two of "Family Guy", right?
At the beginning of the show, J.J. get's a mysterious call from an old acquaintance that needs to meet with him urgently. Apparently, she is someone he once dated, but who is now engaged to be married to a football player at school. At this point, I think I would have been questioning why a girl, who I haven't spoken to in some time all of sudden wants to meet me; but no, not the Casanova of the ghetto, James Jr. So anyway, when she finally shows up at the Evans' apartment, J.J., thinking he is about to get his groove on, instead he hears, "J.J., you gave me V-D (venereal disease, aka STD)". At that point, J.J.'s whole life flashes before his eyes and he goes into that Vietnam-vet like 1000 yard stare. Then for next 10 minutes of the episode, J.J. goes into a comical, yet serious, panic attack.
Later in the show, Thelma, Michael, and J.J. all go down to the free clinic to get J.J. tested for a sexually transmitted disease. But low and behold, his test results come back negative; he had dodged a bullet this time. After a brief conversation with his accuser, they all realize that she has only had two sexually partners, J.J. and her fiancé; and with some 1970s subtraction, they figured that her fiancé must have given her an venereal disease, not J.J...
You are probably asking yourself, "What can this GoodTimes episode teach me?" The answer: What you don't know can hurt you! If you are sexually active, you should get tested regularly. The peace of mind alone should be more than enough reward!
